So, welcome back to my favorite movies countdown. As we go back, you may notice a theme in some of these movies. My favorite movies are typically comedies, movies about movies, and/or movies about the rise and/or fall of the characters that populate the movie. So, my number 9 may actually be the one movie on the list that encompasses all three of these themes.
It's Paul Thomas Anderson's 1997 modern classic...Boogie Nights
This is the most recent addition to the list. I watched it last year during one of my breaks from school, late at night. (Because honestly, who wants to have that awkward conversation with your parent about why you are watching the movie about porn movies?)
This movie is just GOOD!!! I wasn't really expecting to like it as much as I did but I fell in love. Although many accuse this is of being PTA's Scorsese ripoff, I think it shows how solid of a writer he would become with his later movies. PTA shows that yes, these characters are stupid, naive, or corrupted but it makes them more human, which I think he does a lot better than Scorsese. (But, we will talk about my feelings about Scorsese soon enough. Don't you worry.)
This movie is about the porn industry, so yes there are some sexual scenes which made this movie famous (especially the last scene). But it is mainly about the rise and fall of a long ago time that we will never be able to experience. It is about the corruption that came with the introduction of drugs (of course!). It is a beautiful movie that needs to be experienced.
The acting is extremely top-notched. In fact, this may be the best acted movie on my list. None of these performances are trainwrecks. Heck, Mark Wahlberg works very well as the super naive but easily corruptible Dirk Diggler.
Go out and watch this movie!!!
