Revisiting Roswell: Introduction

WARNING: MINOR SPOILERS FOR BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (ABOUT THE END OF SEASON 3)

As many of you know, I am starting to delve in my sci-fi/fandom geeky girl side that I have long tried to hide. This does include my recently-found love for a show called Roswell. Some of you might be wondering, “What happened to that show?” or “That was a show back in the day?” Let’s travel back to maybe the best pop-culture year of the past 20 years: 1999. Buffy and friends have graduated from high school and are on their way to college. Angel is on his way to new adventures and possibly redemption in LA. We have received answers to “What’s the Matrix?” and “Who’s the Blair Witch?”. Foo Fighters show how they “Learn to Fly” and No Doubt released their long-awaited follow-up to Tragic Kingdom. We all waited for what would happen after Y2K struck. This year was also the year that Roswell debuted on the WB. I was 9/10 at the time so I don’t really remember any of this. The WB was the place to be for sci-fi/fantasy/”genre” television at the turn of the century. Along with Buffy and Angel, you also had Charmed, Smallville, and Roswell on that channel at around the same time. Unfortunately, Roswell got lost in the shuffle because of the confusing mix of genres it had. One Internet fan had it described to him as “X-Files meets Dawson’s Creek”, which is wrong in parts. Yes, this show does deal with aliens and teen romance at the same time, but there was and is something indescribably special about the show. That will be my challenge as I try to blog about the show episode by episode. So, why me?

Well, I started watching the show on Hulu two years ago and got hooked….well until the end of season 1. But that will be discussed later. So, I will say up front that I have not seen every episode. I have seen a good number of them but not all, especially in season 2. So, they will be fresh for me. I will write my blog for every episode as spoiler-free as I can (although this show has very few big spoilers, unlike Buffy or Lost) so if someone were to read this and not be familiar with the show and have it ruined for them, I would feel bad.
To restate, the game plan is have a blog every week with one episode. If I feel like blogging more than that or less than that, I will tweet it out. (By the way, follow me @historybowler). I will discuss the general plot of the episode, what all the main players are up to, any general notes I have for the episode, my rating and critique, and finally my favorite quotes. At the end of every season, I have something special cooked up, so stick tuned!

So, for next week or later this week’s blog, watch Pilot. You can watch all three seasons of Roswell on Netflix and Hulu+ (I Think), or 5 episodes on Hulu (Free) and the WB.com (I think. If this is wrong, please tell me, so I can edit it). If you have any feedback, tweet me or comment on the blog!
Have a Roswell Day!

(This blog is set up similarly to one of my favorite podcasts, Potentialcast, which is an episode by episode breakdown of Buffy where 1 of the hosts has seen all of the episodes and the other 3 have not. Very entertaining! I highly recommend it. Check them out at potentialcast.blogspot.com!)
